What a scan shows

The scale doesn't tell the whole story.

Your weight is only one number. A body-composition DEXA scan can provide information about how that weight is distributed between fat mass, lean mass, and bone-related measurements.

Fat Mass

How much fat your body contains.

Lean Mass

Includes muscle and other lean tissues.

Bone

Bone mineral content and density information.

Two people can weigh the same — but have very different body compositions.

Fat 27%
Lean 73%

First scan

Fat 19%
Lean 81%

Follow-up scan

The scale reads the same both times. The composition doesn't.

Beyond the scale

Are you working hard but not seeing the whole picture?

Whether you're beginning a fitness journey, strength training, losing weight, or simply trying to maintain your health as you age, body composition information can provide another way to track your progress beyond the number on the scale. DEXA is one tool that can help provide additional information about body composition that can complement other health and fitness measurements.

Did you know

Bone loss can happen silently. Osteoporosis may not cause noticeable symptoms until a fracture occurs.

DEXA is the most common test for measuring bone mineral density. Central DEXA generally measures the hip and spine.

Men need to pay attention to bone health too. The CDC reports osteoporosis in approximately 4.2% of men and 18.8% of women age 50 and older.

DEXA results are not a diagnosis by themselves and should be interpreted by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional in the context of the patient's medical history and other information.

Bone health facts

Know your numbers. Understand your body. Protect your future.

A DEXA scan provides valuable insight into your bone health and body composition. In a quick, painless scan, you can learn more about bone density, body fat, and lean muscle mass — information that can help you make more informed decisions about your health. DEXA is a quick, noninvasive test that is commonly used to measure bone mineral density, particularly at the hip and spine.

Your bones can lose strength without you knowing it.

Osteoporosis is often called a "silent" disease because bone loss can occur without obvious symptoms. A DEXA scan can identify low bone density before a fracture occurs and can help healthcare providers assess fracture risk and monitor bone health over time. According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 20 men over age 50 are affected by osteoporosis.

1 in 5

Women over age 50 affected by osteoporosis.

1 in 20

Men over age 50 affected by osteoporosis.

~2 million

Osteoporosis-related broken bones each year in the U.S., per the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation.

Bone health is about more than age.

Bone density can be affected by age, genetics, body weight, certain medications, medical conditions, hormonal changes, and lifestyle factors. Understanding your baseline can give you valuable information to discuss with your healthcare provider. NIAMS notes that DEXA can help identify osteoporosis, detect low bone density before osteoporosis develops, predict fracture risk, and monitor treatment effectiveness.

Who can benefit

A DEXA scan may be worth considering if you're…

  • An adult concerned about bone health
  • Someone with a family history of osteoporosis
  • An individual who has experienced certain fractures
  • A postmenopausal woman
  • An older adult
  • Living with certain medical conditions or risk factors
  • Taking medications that may affect bone health
  • Interested in establishing a baseline for future comparison

DEXA results are not a diagnosis by themselves and should be interpreted by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional in the context of the patient's medical history and other information.

Before you arrive

What to wear — keep it simple, keep it metal-free.

Best choices

  • Comfortable clothing with no metal — t-shirts, sweatshirts, athletic wear, leggings, or sweatpants
  • Elastic-waist pants
  • A simple sports bra, or a bra without metal hardware
  • Clothing that's easy to remove or change if needed

What to avoid

  • Zippers, metal buttons and snaps
  • Belts and belt buckles
  • Underwire bras
  • Clothing with metal decorations, rivets, or grommets
  • Metallic fibers
  • Jewelry, watches, and piercings
  • Clothing with objects in the pockets

DEXA uses very low-dose X-rays to distinguish between bone and soft tissue. Metal can appear very dense on the X-ray and may interfere with the measurements. Consistent clothing also improves comparability between future scans.
